AGENT ORANGE VA DISABILITY
Agent Orange VA disability benefits are available to Veterans who were exposed to toxic herbicides during military service and later developed serious medical conditions that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recognizes as presumptively service-connected.
During the Vietnam War and other military operations, the U.S. military used Agent Orange to remove dense vegetation. This herbicide contained dioxin, a highly toxic chemical now linked to numerous long-term health conditions in exposed Veterans. As a result, the VA provides disability compensation and healthcare benefits to qualifying Veterans affected by Agent Orange exposure.
Agent Orange Exposure and Health Conditions
Exposure to Agent Orange has been associated with a range of illnesses, including various cancers, metabolic disorders, neurological conditions, and skin diseases. Many Veterans did not experience symptoms until years after service. Because of this delayed onset, the VA identifies specific conditions that are commonly linked to Agent Orange exposure.
Agent Orange Presumptive Conditions
The VA recognizes certain illnesses as Agent Orange presumptive conditions, meaning they are generally considered service-connected for eligible Veterans. Commonly recognized conditions include:
-
Prostate cancer
-
Lung and respiratory cancers
-
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
-
Hodgkin’s disease
-
Multiple myeloma
-
Type 2 diabetes
-
Parkinson’s disease
-
Ischemic heart disease
-
Peripheral neuropathy
-
Chloracne
These conditions are part of the VA’s list of illnesses associated with herbicide exposure.
Eligibility for VA Disability Benefits
Eligibility for VA disability for Agent Orange exposure is generally based on military service in locations and time periods where herbicides were used, along with a diagnosis of a recognized condition. Service in Vietnam, the Korean DMZ, and certain bases in Thailand may qualify under VA guidelines.
VA Disability Compensation and Healthcare
Veterans with qualifying Agent Orange-related conditions may be eligible for VA disability compensation and VA healthcare benefits. Disability ratings are assigned based on the severity of the condition, and compensation amounts vary accordingly.
Many Veterans aren’t sure whether they experienced toxic exposure during military service or how such exposure might relate to VA disability benefits. You may be affected by Agent Orange VA disability or other VA toxic exposure conditions if:
-
You served in locations or during periods known for toxic exposure
-
You developed chronic or unexplained symptoms following military service
-
Your medical condition is included on the VA’s presumptive conditions list
-
You recall potential exposure even without an official service record
-
Other service members from your unit have similar health conditions
Understanding these factors can help Veterans determine potential eligibility for VA disability claims related to toxic exposure and other service-connected illnesses.
